Cea mai mare surpriză a fost absența filmului Wicked: For Good din categoria Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, în ciuda nominalizărilor obținute de Cynthia Erivo și Ariana Grande pentru performanțele lor actoricești. Cynthia Erivo a intrat în istoria Globurilor de Aur ca prima femeie de culoare nominalizată la două roluri principale într-un film de tip musical sau comedie.
O altă nominalizare neașteptată i-a revenit lui Glen Powell, pentru rolul de quarterback din comedia Hulu Chad Powers. Actorul Jacob Elordi, cunoscut din serialul Euphoria, a primit două nominalizări, una pentru rol secundar în filmul Frankenstein și alta pentru miniseria The Narrow Road to the Deep North.
